Extension:Semantic MediaWiki

From Gamepedia Help Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

Semantic MediaWiki (SMW) is an extension for managing structured data in your wiki and for querying that data to create dynamic representations: tables, timelines, maps, lists, etc. Many of those tasks, however, can be handled by Cargo and/or DPL3. Semantic MediaWiki is considered to be deprecated in terms of use on Gamepedia and will not be approved for use on any new wikis. See below.

The future of SMW at Gamepedia[edit | edit source]

Due to major incompatibility issues with many other extensions and systems used on Gamepedia, we can no longer support installing this extension on new wikis and are recommending that wiki administrators consider using Cargo and/or DPL3.

But my wiki uses SMW! What do I do?[edit | edit source]

First, DON'T PANIC! We will not be forcibly removing Semantic MediaWiki from your wikis. We would ask that you evaluate how pervasive the use of SMW is on your own wiki. Things to consider:

  • Do you use it for only a few things?
  • Do you have many templates that rely on it?

For example, if you only use it to automatically add list items to Navboxes, there is a very easy workaround which uses DPL3.

What if I want to move to Cargo but don't have the skill ?[edit | edit source]

We will do our level best to help you move, but we are also learning the ropes. We will be working to leverage the accumulated knowledge of our community to help smooth the transition.
